Setting Healthy Boundaries

Setting Healthy Boundaries: Why It Matters and How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Claire@bridgetherapy.uk

Do you find yourself saying “yes” when every part of you wants to say “no”? Perhaps you agree to one more favour, stay late again, or keep the peace at your own expense. Then you lie awake feeling drained, resentful, or quietly anxious.

If that sounds familiar, you are far from alone. Many of the people I see in my therapy room are kind, capable and caring, and that is often exactly why they struggle with boundaries. The good news is that boundaries are a skill, and like any skill, they can be learned.

What are healthy boundaries?

A boundary is simply a line that shows where you end and other people begin. It tells others, kindly and clearly, what is okay for you and what isn’t.

Boundaries can be about many things:

  • Your time – how much you give, and when
  • Your energy – what you can realistically take on
  • Your emotions – not taking responsibility for everyone else’s feelings
  • Your body and space – physical comfort and privacy
  • Your values – what matters to you, and what you won’t compromise on

Healthy boundaries are not walls. They are not about shutting people out, being selfish or being unkind. In fact, they often make relationships stronger, because people know where they stand with you, and you can give from a place of choice rather than obligation.

Signs your boundaries might need some attention

Sometimes we don’t notice our boundaries are being crossed until we feel the effects. You might recognise some of these:

  • You often feel exhausted, overwhelmed or stretched too thin
  • You feel guilty when you put yourself first
  • You say yes automatically, then regret it later
  • You feel resentful towards people you care about
  • You worry a lot about what others think of you
  • You avoid conflict at almost any cost
  • Your own needs, hobbies and rest keep slipping down the list

None of these mean there is anything wrong with you. They are simply signals that something needs to change.

Why setting boundaries can feel so hard

If saying “no” makes your heart race, there is a good reason for it. Deep down, our brains are wired for belonging. For our ancestors, being rejected by the group could be dangerous, so the more primitive, emotional part of the brain still treats disapproval as a threat.

When we are stressed or anxious, that primitive part of the brain takes more control. It tends to fall back on old patterns, such as people-pleasing or avoiding conflict, because they have felt “safe” before. Meanwhile, the calm, rational part of the brain, the part that can weigh things up and respond thoughtfully, has less of a say.

The more stress we carry, the harder it becomes to hold a boundary. And the fewer boundaries we hold, the more stress we carry. It can become a cycle, but it is one that can be broken.

Simple steps to start setting healthy boundaries

You don’t need to change everything at once. Small steps build confidence.

  1. Notice how you feel. Resentment or tension can be a useful clue that a boundary is needed.
  2. Start small. Practise in situations that feel manageable first.
  3. Recognise your wins. Each small step helps build confidence for the next.

These are just a starting point. In sessions, we work together on the approach that fits you and your life, so new habits feel natural rather than forced.

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help

Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things. That is where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can make a real difference.

In our sessions, we focus on where you want to be rather than going over the past. Together, we explore what life would look like with healthier boundaries, and the small, practical steps that will get you there.

Hypnosis itself is a natural, deeply relaxing state, a little like the moment just before you drift off to sleep. In this calm state, stress levels reduce and the rational, problem-solving part of the brain is better able to take charge. This makes it easier to:

  • Feel calmer and more in control in situations that used to trigger anxiety
  • Respond thoughtfully instead of reacting on autopilot
  • Build self-worth and believe that your needs matter too
  • Rehearse new responses in your mind, so they feel more natural in real life

Many clients find that as their anxiety reduces, saying “no” (and “yes” to themselves) becomes far less daunting.

You deserve to look after yourself too

Setting boundaries isn’t about becoming a different person. It is about giving yourself the same care and respect you so readily give to others. When you protect your time and energy, you have more of yourself to share with the people and things that matter most.

If you would like support with setting healthy boundaries, I offer a free, no-obligation initial consultation, either in person in Ironbridge, Shropshire, or online. We can talk about what you would like to change and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy could help.
